Japan Summer 2007

I joined Emmie in Japan for three weeks at the end of July/beginning of August. I met her family and got a tour of east-central Honshu. The destinations we visited (in the order of the pictures below) were: 1) Mt. Tsukuba 2) Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo 3) Kabuki Theatre, Tokyo 4) Suidobashi, Tokyo 5) Taiyo Beach, Ibaraki 6) Emporer's Palace, Tokyo 7) Hayama, Kanagawa (south of Tokyo) 8) Lake Yamanaka, Mt Fuji vicinity 9) Mt Fuji 10) Kamakura Daibutsu 11) Nikko 12) Kinugawa Hot Springs 13) Tsuchiura, omatsuri (festival) 14) Itako (boat ride) 15) Narita Airport.

I had a fabulous time although Japan gets pretty hot and humid in summer. The omatsuri (festival) was one of my favorite experiences. Dancing with a 55 lbs dragon head and pulling a 2 ton wooden float down the streets of Tsuchiura made for an exhaustingly good time. Emmie's family was very welcoming and although there was a bit of a language barrier, we had a translator and could resort to gestures when necessary. I did pick up a little Japanese (Emmie's niece, Kiri was my tutor) and I look forward to taking Japanese at school. I can't wait to go back!
