Fransiscan Field Trip 10/29/2005

On a pleasant Saturday morning the first year UCSC grads piled into a pair of "15" passenger vans and headed out on a good ol' fashioned geology field trip. We headed north on hwy 1, hitting our first two stops in a dense coastal fog. I wasn't quite awake at these stops, so I didn't take many pictures. Moving up the coast, we crossed the Golden Gate and into Marin County. Here, we made a stop to see some "knockers." Knockers (using geologic terminology) are large boulders exposed in situ in a geologic formation. These boulders are NOT eroded from a more coherent formation. After enjoying these knockers, we moved on to see the deformed chert sandstone above the Golden Gate. Finally we visted the faulted terrain of Rodeo Lagoon where pillow basalts had been rotated 90o from their original orientation. In typical geology-field-trip-fashion we ended the day with refreshments in the parking lot.
