A Brief Personal History

Hi! I'm Reid Parsons - welcome to my homepage. I'm currently a PhD Candidate at UC Santa Cruz studying climate change on Mars (see research). I grew up in Rangely, CO (see Rangely Pics). Rangely is 2500 people strong and is a town that most Coloradans don't even know about. Drilling for oil, coal mining and Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) are just about all that sustains the town. Whatever Rangely lacks in economic lavishness is made up for in natural beauty. Outdoor adventures with my family and friends during my childhood and adolescence led to a fascination and love for the outdoors that has resulted in my pursuit of a professional career in Earth and Planetary Sciences.

After high school I went to Cornell University where I recieved a BS in Science of Earth Systems (an interdisciplinary study of the Earth Sciences). While at Cornell I spent a semester in Hawai'i participating in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Field Proagram (see Cornell EES Program and Hawai'i 2004). I think of the experiences in this program as the highlight of my undergraduate years.

I'm now a graduate student at UC Santa Cruz studying planetary science. It is here that I met my wife, Ayumi who was studying Early Childhood Education / Human Development at the time as a student from Japan. She is now working as a teacher and advocate for young children and their families. We are enjoying sharing our lives together in Santa Cruz and look forward to what the future may bring.
